Have you considered the importance of your gutters, just like the roof or the facade of your house? The answer is probably no. Most homeowners don't know the importance of gutters in protecting their homes from water damage. Most basement water problems are caused by poor gutters and downspouts, as leaking and overflowing gutters can pose a significant risk to walls in the medium term. Therefore, maintaining a well-functioning drainage system is crucial, and at Rosales Gutters, we know how to install the best gutters with quality processes and the highest standards to ensure homeowners that their home's structure will not be affected.
In this article, we want to show you the installation process, what we require, and the characteristics and details of the gutters we use to keep Rhode Island homes happy.
Choosing the best material for your gutters is vital as it determines how your gutters will perform and their durability through heavy rain seasons. We also invite you to read our article Choosing
the Best Material for Your Gutters. At Rosales Gutters, our most recommended material is aluminum. This material is much lighter, making it easier to assemble and lift, ideal for working at height. It's also easier to handle. Since it doesn't rust, the warranties for aluminum focus on the durability of the paint, generally 20 to 25 years. Additionally, aluminum systems are usually more affordable. You can choose colors that match your house's style, making it an excellent alternative.
The components we use for gutter installation can be found in lumberyards, hardware stores, and home improvement centers. One of the most popular styles is the 5-inch K-Style due to its universal size and shape, allowing brand mixing. Gutters come in lengths of 10, 20, and 33 feet, and downspouts come in widths of 3 and 4 inches and lengths of 10 feet. For areas with trees, it is recommended to use 4-inch downspouts and accessories along with gutter guards.
In addition to the gutters and downspouts, accessories that complement the installation are equally important. These include pieces for interior and exterior corners, end caps, splice joints, downspout elbows, and various fasteners. To seal the system, a high-quality sealant is needed. Components can be joined with 1/8-inch rivets or sheet metal screws, available in the same colors as the chosen gutters.
Hidden hangers are preferred today as they encompass the interior of the gutter and are invisible from the ground. There are two types: a heavier one with a built-in fastening screw and a lighter one that can be nailed or screwed. The lighter hangers are economical and effective, while the heavier ones are used in stress points like corners and near downspouts.
Before starting the installation, the Rosales Gutters team assembles as many components as possible on the ground. They use a sheet of plywood on sawhorses as a workstation and determine the starting point for the gutter work. For simple gable or hip roofs, they begin at one end. For more complex roofs, they start at an interior corner.
The team installs a splice joint at each end of an interior corner piece and cuts the first section of the gutter to the desired length with metal shears. Components are fastened with short sheet metal screws or rivets, preferring the latter for a cleaner appearance and fewer sharp points inside the gutter.
The team checks if the opposite end of the gutter needs an end cap. These can be mechanically fastened or glued with sealant. Next, they install a downspout outlet fitting in the gutter, measuring carefully to determine the best location. They cut the opening for the fitting with metal shears and fasten it with short screws.
Hangers are installed every 2 to 3 feet, hooking one end under the gutter's front flange and pressing the other end over the back. The gutter is lifted with assistance and secured to the roof fascia with 2-inch galvanized screws or nails.
For end-to-end gutter splicing, we prefer overlapping as it keeps the gutters straight and discreet. Sealant is applied to the receiving gutter, overlapped with the new length, and fastened with sheet metal screws.
To install the splice joints on corner pieces, they are fixed with rivets and the new gutter length is connected. The installation continues with fastening and riveting until all necessary gutters and downspouts are installed. All joints are sealed with gutter sealant.
The final process is installing downspouts and extensions, starting by pushing a downspout elbow into the first outlet fitting and aligning the second elbow at the house corner. A short downspout length is measured and cut to join the elbows, allowing a 1 1/2 inch insertion. All joints are riveted, and supports are fixed to the house.
The downspout is brought within 1 foot of the ground, and the last elbow is installed. A notch is cut in a 36-inch downspout length to make a flip-up extension, which is screwed to the elbow to direct water away from the house and facilitate mowing.
At Rosales Gutters, we ensure that every gutter installation is efficient and durable.
